What are the symptoms of\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Kennel Cough<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The primary sign to look out for is a\u202fdeep hacking cough, which can sometimes lead to retching, sneezing, snorting, gagging or vomiting.\u00a0 In some cases<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0you may only notice your dog starting to cough after excitement or exercise<\/span>\u00a0and you\u00a0<\/span>may also notice<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0discharge coming from your dog\u2019s eyes or nose. Some dogs may get\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>fever, and\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0very<\/span>\u00a0rare cases may\u00a0<\/span>progress to pneumonia.\u00a0 Symptoms will start\u00a0<\/span>after three<\/span>\u00a0to 10 days \u2013 and can go on for up to\u00a0<\/span>three<\/span>\u00a0weeks<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Often the cough is worse at bedtime causing sleepless nights\u00a0<\/span>all around<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How is Kennel Cough diagnosed?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnosis is often based on the clinical signs and the history given by the owner, also if the dog is housed together with lots of other dogs that are all presenting similar signs, it\u202fmakes the diagnosis of kennel cough more probable.<\/span>\u00a0If a gentle\u00a0<\/span>palpitation<\/span>\u00a0of the throat causes a retching cough, Kennel Cough is likely.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What treatment is available for Kennel Cough?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no specific treatment for viruses involved in\u00a0<\/span>K<\/span>ennel\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ough, but antibiotics are\u00a0<\/span>sometimes<\/span>\u00a0used to treat bacterial infections.\u202fInfected dogs should be rested and isolated from other dogs<\/span>\u00a0for around 14 days<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In most cases<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0dogs will recover from\u00a0<\/span>K<\/span>ennel\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ough\u00a0<\/span>within\u00a0<\/span>three<\/span>\u00a0weeks<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Ensure they are living in a\u00a0<\/span>well-ventilated<\/span>\u00a0area and avoid the use of a lead and collar.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>To aid recovery<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0your dog may<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be prescribed cough suppressants or anti-inflammatories.<\/span>\u00a0Sometimes antibiotics may<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be required to target Bord<\/span>e<\/span>tella\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>ronchis<\/span>eptica<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best way to prevent Kennel Cough?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The best way to prevent\u00a0<\/span>K<\/span>ennel\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ough in Birmingham is through <\/span>v<\/span>accination.
